No hot water on a busy morning is more than an inconvenience. If you have an electric unit, learning how to test heating element issues can help you narrow down the problem before deciding between a repair and a service call. A failed element is common, but it is not the only reason an electric water heater stops producing hot water.
This test is for electric tank-style water heaters. Gas water heaters do not use electric heating elements, and their no-hot-water problems require a different diagnostic approach. Start With the Signs of a Bad Heating Element

2. Expose the element terminals

3. Test resistance across the two terminals
Set your multimeter to the lowest appropriate resistance setting, marked with the ohm symbol, Ω. Touch one probe to each screw terminal on the element.
A functioning element should show resistance, usually around 10 to 20 ohms on a typical 240-volt residential water heater. The exact number depends on the element’s wattage. For example, a 4,500-watt element commonly reads about 12 to 13 ohms, while a 5,500-watt element may read close to 10 ohms.
If the display shows OL, 1, or infinite resistance, the element has an open circuit and has failed. If it reads very close to zero ohms, the element may be shorted. Either result generally means replacement is needed.
4. Check for a grounded element
An element may have continuity across its terminals but still be damaged internally and leaking current into the tank. This can trip the breaker or cause inconsistent heating.
Keep one probe on one element screw terminal. Touch the other probe to the metal mounting flange around the element or to the bare metal tank. Repeat using the other terminal. A good element should show OL or no continuity on both checks. Any measurable resistance or continuity between a terminal and the tank indicates a grounded element that should be replaced.
5. Repeat the test on the other element
Test both elements, even if the symptoms seem to point to only one. Sediment, age, dry firing, and hard-water conditions can affect both elements over time. A technician also checks the thermostats, reset button, wiring, and power supply before declaring an element the sole cause.
Do Not Miss the Reset Button and Thermostats
Behind the upper access panel, you will usually find a red high-limit reset button. If it has tripped, press it firmly once after the power is off. A tripped reset can restore hot water temporarily, but it is a warning that the unit may have an overheating, thermostat, wiring, or element problem.
Do not keep resetting it if it trips again. Repeated tripping is not normal and can signal a failed thermostat or electrical issue that needs professional attention.
Thermostats can mimic a bad element. If an element tests good but does not receive power during the heating cycle, the thermostat or wiring may be at fault. Diagnosing energized thermostat circuits requires live-voltage testing, which is best left to an experienced technician. The risk is not worth a guess.
When Replacing an Element Makes Sense
Replacing a failed heating element is often an affordable repair when the tank is in good condition, the unit is not leaking, and it is otherwise operating reliably. The tank must be drained below the element level before removal, and the new element must match the voltage, wattage, and mounting style of the original.
The trade-off is that an element repair will not solve a corroded tank, a leaking seam, heavy sediment buildup, damaged wiring, or multiple aging components. If your water heater is near the end of its expected service life, has rusty water, leaks from the tank itself, or needs repeated repairs, replacement may offer better value than putting more money into an unreliable unit.
Never energize the new element until the tank is completely full. Open a hot-water faucet after refilling and let it run until air stops sputtering. Then check for leaks at the element gasket before turning the breaker back on.

Call for service if the breaker will not stay on, you find burnt wires, the reset button keeps tripping, the tank is leaking, or your meter readings are unclear. You should also call if you need same-day hot water but do not have the tools or confidence to work safely around 240 volts.
