Recovery rate deserves attention as well. It is the number of gallons a tank heater can raise to the set temperature in one hour. Gas units commonly have faster recovery than electric tank models, but the exact performance depends on the specific model, burner or element capacity, and incoming water temperature.
In Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, winter groundwater can be much colder than it is in summer. Your heater has to work harder to bring that water up to a usable temperature. A system that felt adequate in July may struggle during the coldest part of the year if it was sized too closely.
Avoid Sizing Up Without a Reason
